Role Overview:
We are looking for a compassionate and dedicated Autism Support Assistant to provide one-on-one and small group support to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The successful candidate will play a key role in helping these students navigate the school environment, access the curriculum, and develop their social and communication skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide tailored support to students with autism, helping them to engage with lessons and participate in school activities.
  • Work closely with the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) and teachers to implement individualized education plans (IEPs).
  • Assist students with communication, social interaction, and sensory processing challenges, using appropriate strategies and tools.
  • Support students in developing life skills, promoting their independence and confidence.
  • Monitor and record students' progress, providing feedback to teachers and parents/carers.
  • Foster a positive, safe, and inclusive environment that respects the needs and abilities of all students.
  • Collaborate with other staff members to ensure a consistent and supportive approach to student care.

Requirements:

  • Experience working with children or young people with autism, preferably in an educational setting.
  • A strong understanding of autism and related challenges, including communication and sensory needs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trusting relationships with students, staff, and parents.
  • Patience, empathy, and a calm demeanor, especially in challenging situations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and adapt to the needs of individual students.
  • A commitment to promoting inclusion and diversity within the school community.

Desirable:

  • Relevant qualifications in special educational needs, autism, or related fields.
  • Experience with specific autism interventions or tools, such as PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) or social stories.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding and child protection policies.
