About the Role:
We are looking for a highly organised and self-motivated individual to join our Estates Team as a Site Caretaker in Dartington, Devon. This role is essential in ensuring that our school buildings and grounds are maintained to the highest standards, providing a safe, welcoming, and well-maintained environment for our pupils, staff, and visitors.

Job Purpose:
As the Site Caretaker, you will be responsible for organising and carrying out both planned and reactive maintenance across the school site. Your primary duty is to ensure that the school's properties are kept in optimum working condition, complying with all regulatory and health & safety standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform general maintenance tasks, including carpentry, fixing locks, electrical work, plumbing, drainage, painting, and decorating.
  • Monitor and manage control of resources and stock levels, ensuring timely replenishment.
  • Organise and oversee contractors working on-site.
  • Operate and monitor routine security arrangements to prevent unauthorised access, theft, and vandalism.
  • Respond to emergencies such as fire, flood, or break-ins, ensuring the safety and security of the site.
  • Maintain external areas, ensuring they are free from hazards such as litter, ice, and leaves.
  • Use IT systems to communicate, record information, and maintain necessary records.
  • Interact with staff, pupils, parents, and visitors in a professional and friendly manner.
  • Report major repairs to the Estates Manager and handle minor security and safety issues.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • Proficient in general maintenance tasks with a basic understanding of electrical work, plumbing, and carpentry.
  • IT literate, with the ability to use Microsoft Office and a mobile phone effectively.
  • Good organisational skills, with strong literacy and numeracy abilities.
  • Excellent verbal communication and active listening skills.
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations and maintain confidentiality.
  • Comfortable working around children and young people, with a commitment to safeguarding.
  • Physically capable of undertaking demanding work and able to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Full, current driving licence and willingness to drive between site locations.

Preferred Experience:

  • Previous experience in building maintenance within a school or similar environment.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety policies, COSHH regulations, and the ability to identify and mitigate risks.
