Design and Technology Technician 

Teaching Personnel are working with one of our partner secondary schools in the Wellingborough area of Northamptonshire, who are seeking to appoint a part-time Design and Technology Technician. 

We are looking for someone who can support both teachers and students by preparing materials and equipment for lessons, setting up workstations, and ensuring all tools and resources are ready for use. They are responsible for maintaining and repairing equipment, including machinery, tools, and ICT resources, as well as ensuring health and safety standards are met. The technician helps manage stock, orders supplies, and assists in practical demonstrations or projects, playing a key role in facilitating a smooth and efficient learning environment in the DT department.

Salary: NJC Scale 5 (points 12-17)
Contract: 20 – 25 hours per week
39 weeks per year (term time plus one week)
Actual Salary: £12,284.14- £13,376.28 per annum

Curriculum Support

  • Prepare a range of materials for teaching purposes, including wood, metal and plastic, using appropriate hand tools.& machines
  • Prepare, set up and check machinery, equipment and apparatus for teaching purposes.
  • Issue equipment, tools, components and materials to teaching staff and students, and maintaining appropriate records.
  • Provide technical advice and assistance to teaching staff and students.
  • Design and make simple models and teaching aids. 
  • Helping to cover lessons as and when needed, to be agreed with the Head of Faculty.


Maintenance of Equipment and Stock

  • Regularly service and maintain workshop furniture, machinery tools, components and accessories in accordance with manufacturers’ schedules.
  • Arrange for external maintenance and repair if necessary.
  • Keep appropriate records of service and maintenance undertaken.
  • Maintain appropriate stock levels with the department, carry out stock checks and reorder materials when required.
  • Assist with purchase order process
  • Ensure the correct use and maintenance of audio-visual equipment specific to the department.

General Rules and Regulations 

  • Be safety conscious at all times.
  • Only use agreed cleaning aids and materials
  • Always use protective clothing provided
  • Be cautious when using electrical machinery e.g. ‘trailing leads’. 
  • Report all faults to supervisor/manager as soon as they are discovered.
  • Always use warning signs e.g. ‘wet/slippery floors’ etc.

Other Duties

  • Assisting in preparing the learning environment
  • Promote positive student behaviour in and around the school, to ensure a constructive working environment.
  • Attend relevant CPD training as directed by the Head of Faculty
  • Act to ensure pupils’ health and safety.
  • Following school policies and procedures especially those relating to child protection and health and safety.
