Teaching Personnel is looking to appoint Learning Support Assistants in the Newport area to work within a secondary school ASD base, providing support to young people aged 11-16 with Autism. This role requires someone with personal or professional experience to feel equipped and confident in supporting these pupils.

As a Learning Support Assistant, you will work both 1:1 and generally, depending on the school's needs each day. For example, if your 1:1 student is absent, you will assist the teacher in other classroom and school activities. When your 1:1 student is present, you will also engage and build relationships with all children in the class. This helps familiarize the class with you and keeps all students comfortable and confident in your presence.

This role starts in September 2024 and will last initially until August 2025. If successful, you will have the opportunity to apply for a permanent position at the school in the summer term.

Working hours are 8:30-15:30 (Mon – Fri - term time only). Salary ranges from £83.85 to £96 per day, depending on experience and qualifications!

The school is seeking full-time applicants, but part-time will also be considered if you can commit to a job share working at least 2 days a week.

  • Providing dedicated classroom support to pupils with Additional Learning Needs, particularly those with Autism, Learning Difficulties, and ADHD.
  • Supporting pupils in developing self-confidence and social interaction skills.
  • Encouraging pupils to take pride in their achievements.
  • Working closely as part of a team with other members of the teaching staff across the school, following school policies and ethos.

The right person for this job will be calm, supportive, and nurturing, but able to be firm when needed. You will be someone that pupils can look to for support and advice, as well as someone they look up to and respect.

The ideal candidate will have experience supporting children or vulnerable individuals, but this is not essential. If you have no previous classroom experience, you must demonstrate transferable skills.

The successful applicant will need an enhanced DBS on the update service, EWC registration, and be able to provide 2 references. Teaching Personnel will assist you with these during the on-boarding process.
