Are you passionate about helping young learners develop strong reading skills? Do you have experience in delivering phonics sessions and interventions? A large primary school in Southport is seeking a dedicated Phonics Intervention Assistant to join their team, working across the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1 (KS1).

As a Phonics Intervention Assistant, you will play a crucial role in supporting pupils' reading development. In the mornings, you will deliver targeted phonics lessons to your designated small group, ensuring that each child is given the support they need to progress. In the afternoons, you will provide tailored interventions across EYFS and KS1, working with pupils who require additional assistance to achieve their phonics goals.

  • Deliver daily phonics sessions to small groups of children, using a structured phonics programme.
  • Identify pupils who need additional support and deliver targeted interventions to help them meet their reading milestones.
  • Work closely with class teachers to plan and implement phonics activities that align with the school’s curriculum.
  • Monitor and assess pupils' progress, providing feedback to teachers and parents as required.
  • Support the creation of a positive and encouraging learning environment where all children can succeed.
  • Adapt teaching methods and materials to meet the varying needs of pupils.
  • Assist in the development of resources and strategies to improve phonics teaching and learning across the school.
  • Attend relevant training and professional development opportunities to stay up-to-date with best practices in phonics instruction.

Essential:

  • Experience working with young children, ideally in an educational setting.
  • A strong understanding of phonics and early reading development.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and motivate young learners.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine interest in helping children succeed.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers and other staff members.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to manage time effectively.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience in delivering phonics programmes (e.g., Read Write Inc., Letters and Sounds).
  • A relevant qualification in education or childcare.
  • Experience in providing interventions or additional support to children with learning needs.
