SEN Support Assistant to work in a Primary School

Teaching personnel are seeking a SEN Support Assistant to work full time in their Primary School with a Year 3 Pupil with PMLD.

Working as a Special Educational Needs (SEN) support assistant for a Year 3 pupil with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD) is both a challenging and rewarding role. Here are some key aspects to consider before applying for the position:

1. Understanding PMLD

Pupils with PMLD often have significant physical disabilities, sensory impairments, and learning needs. Your role will include:

  • Supporting the child with communication, mobility, and interaction.
  • Assisting with personal care (feeding, toileting, dressing).
  • Working with other professionals (speech therapists, occupational therapists) to implement tailored education and care plans.

2. Creating an Inclusive Learning Environment

  • Modify lessons and activities to suit the pupil’s abilities.
  • Use sensory materials and multi-sensory approaches to engage the child.
  • Ensure accessibility by adapting classroom spaces and resources.

3. Collaboration with Teachers and Parents

  • Work closely with the class teacher to adapt lessons.
  • Regular communication with parents to track progress.
  • Attend multi-disciplinary team meetings to discuss the child’s development.

4. Emotional and Behavioural Support

  • Help the pupil with emotional regulation.
  • Use positive reinforcement and patience to manage challenging behaviors.
  • Develop trusting relationships for effective support.

5. Training and Development

  • Be open to ongoing professional development, such as attending SEN and safeguarding training.
  • Learn to use specialized equipment (hoists, communication aids).
