A fast-improving community special school in Scarborough is seeking a dedicated and passionate SEN Teacher to join their team of committed professionals. This role is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the school’s mission of providing a nurturing and inclusive environment for students with a range of special educational needs (SEN), including those with Autism, learning difficulties, and physical disabilities.

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching secondary-age students, helping them to achieve their full potential academically, socially, and emotionally. The school is known for its supportive and collaborative atmosphere, making it an ideal place for an experienced SEN teacher or someone new to the field looking to make a real difference in the lives of young people.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and deliver tailored lessons to meet the individual needs of students with SEN.
  • Create a positive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Work closely with teaching assistants and support staff to ensure the best possible outcomes for students.
  • Monitor and assess student progress, adapting teaching methods where necessary.
  • Collaborate with parents, carers, and external professionals to support the holistic development of students.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of SEN provision within the school.

Requirements:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent teaching qualification.
  • Experience working with students with special educational needs, particularly at the secondary level.
  • Strong understanding of SEN practices, including experience working with a variety of conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), moderate to severe learning difficulties, and physical disabilities.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • A passion for making a positive impact on students' lives and a commitment to their success.
  • Patience, empathy, and the ability to build strong relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Knowledge of relevant assessment tools and learning strategies tailored for SEN students.

Desirable:

  • Experience in a similar role in a special school setting.
  • Relevant SEN qualifications or additional training (e.g. TEACCH, PECS, Makaton).
  • Experience with behaviour management strategies and de-escalation techniques.
