Smile Education is seeking a compassionate and dedicated SEND Teaching Assistant to work in a supportive mainstream primary school in the Smethwick area. This long-term position offers a fantastic opportunity to support children with special educational needs (SEN) and help them thrive in a nurturing and inclusive environment.
About the Role:
As a SEND Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and the school’s SEN team to provide targeted support to children with additional learning needs. You will assist pupils on a one-to-one basis or in small groups, ensuring they can access the curriculum, stay engaged, and reach their full potential.
This is a rewarding role where you will have a direct and lasting impact on the educational progress and well-being of pupils with special needs in a mainstream setting.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Providing one-to-one and small group support to pupils with special educational needs (SEN).
  • Assisting the class teacher in adapting lessons and activities to meet the needs of individual pupils.
  • Helping to manage behaviour and promote a positive learning environment for all students.
  • Supporting the development of social skills, confidence, and independence in pupils with SEN.
  • Liaising with the SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) and other staff members to ensure pupils’ progress is monitored and supported effectively.
  • Assisting with the preparation of tailored learning resources and activities.
  • Offering emotional support and encouragement to help students feel comfortable and confident in the classroom.
Requirements:
  • Experience working with children with special educational needs in a school setting.
  • A relevant qualification such as a Level 2 or 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning, or equivalent (desirable).
  • A patient, empathetic, and proactive approach to supporting children’s learning and well-being.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with pupils, staff, and parents.
  • An enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one).
