As a successful participant in the Future Teachers Programme, you will work as a Cover Supervisor in a secondary school in Bournemouth. Your primary responsibility will be to oversee classes during a teacher’s short-term absence, ensuring that students complete the pre-set work. This role does not involve active teaching, marking, or planning but provides a valuable glimpse into the teaching profession by maintaining a high-quality learning environment for students.

The programme begins in September 2024.

During your placement, you will:

  • Maintain a journal of your daily experiences
  • Observe lessons in both your subject specialism and other areas to broaden your understanding of various teaching methods
  • Learn how different staff members effectively differentiate instruction, manage behaviour, and conduct non-subject activities such as registration and assemblies
  • Collaborate with all staff to support pastoral systems that aid pupil development
  • Familiarize yourself with school policies and their development
  • Study the syllabus in your subject area, identify applicable aspects of your degree, and present your findings to the school
  • Assist pupils with coursework and exam preparation
