Job Description: Teaching Assistant

Are you a compassionate and dedicated individual with a passion for working with young children? Teaching Personnel are seeking a Teaching Assistant to join a reception class, starting in September. In this role, you will have the unique opportunity to support a pupil who presents some challenging behaviours and is non-verbal, with a potential undiagnosed Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Key Responsibilities: Teaching Assistant

  • Provide one-on-one support to the pupil with challenging behaviours, tailored to their specific needs.
  • Assist the classroom teacher in creating a nurturing and inclusive learning environment.
  • Collaborate with the school's Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo) to develop and implement personalized strategies to support the pupil's progress.
  • Foster positive relationships with the pupil, ensuring their well-being, engagement, and social development.
  • Assist in managing and de-escalating challenging behaviours when they arise.
  • Adapt and modify instructional materials to meet the pupil's individual learning requirements.
  • Foster communication and interaction skills for the non-verbal pupil, using alternative communication methods such as visual aids or augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices.
  • Support inclusion in classroom activities and help the pupil integrate with their peers.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Previous experience as a Teaching Assistant or in a similar role is highly desirable.
  • A genuine passion for working with young children and a desire to make a positive impact on their lives.
  • A basic understanding of additional learning needs, particularly related to Autism Spectrum Disorder.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and other staff.
  • Patience, empathy, and resilience in managing challenging behaviors.
  • Experience with non-verbal communication methods, such as Makaton or PECS, is an advantage but not mandatory.
