Are you dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of children who have faced trauma and difficult experiences?

Do you have a background in supporting students with Social Emotional Mental Health (SEMH) needs?

Teaching Personnel is seeking an experienced Teaching Assistant to provide one-on-one support to a Year 7 student at a secondary school in Newport. The student requires assistance due to SEMH challenges, and we are looking for someone with a background in supporting young people who have experienced Trauma and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE).

Salary: £420 - £465 per week (based on experience and qualifications)

Hours: 08:30 - 15:30, Monday to Friday (term time only)

Contract: Temporary until August 2025

As the successful candidate, you will be essential in supporting this student’s educational journey. You will work closely with them on a daily basis, helping to create a nurturing and supportive environment. Experience with SEND, trauma-informed practices, or attachment theory will be beneficial.

About the Role:

In this full-time position, you will work closely with students who have experienced trauma, helping them to navigate their emotional and educational challenges. Your role will involve:

  • Providing Individual Support: Offering one-on-one assistance to pupils with trauma needs, ensuring they feel safe and supported in their learning environment.
  • Implementing Strategies: Applying trauma-informed approaches to help manage emotional responses and promote positive behaviour.
  • Collaborating with Staff: Working alongside teachers and the SENCO to create and implement individualized support plans that address each student's unique needs.
  • Creating a Safe Space: Developing a stable and reassuring atmosphere where students can feel understood and secure.
  • Supporting Resilience: Helping students build coping strategies and resilience to better handle their challenges.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Experience: Previous experience working with students who have experienced trauma or have social, emotional, and mental health needs.
  • Skills: Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive, trusting relationships with students.
  • Empathy: A deep understanding of the effects of trauma on learning and behaviour.
  • Training: Experience in trauma-informed practices, de-escalation techniques, or related professional training is highly valued.
  • Background: Previous experience in a school setting is beneficial, but we also welcome candidates with experience in residential support or similar roles.
